Does perception precede production in the initial stage of French nasal vowel quality acquisition by Japanese learners? A corpus-based discrimination experiment

چکیده
This article presents the results of an AXB discrimination task testing the ability of Japanese beginner learners to distinguish three French nasal vowels /ɑ ̃ɔ ̃ɛ/̃ and compares them with the results of a corpus-based analysis of their production of the same vowels in two tasks (wordlist repetition and wordlist reading). This perception-production study is embedded in an ongoing 2-year longitudinal study in the framework of an international multi-task corpus-based research programme about the phonetic-phonological systems of non-native varieties of French. Our main results indicate first that the /ɑ/̃-/ɛ/̃ contrast is better perceived than the /ɑ/̃-/ɔ/̃ contrast and second that /ɛ/̃ obtains a lower discrimination rate when it is contrasted with /ɑ/̃, whereas no difference is found between /ɔ/̃ and /ɑ/̃. These findings are discussed in light of the production results and support the principle according to which perception precedes production in the acquisition of a new phonological contrast.

Corpus-based L2 phonological data and semi-automatic perceptual analysis: the case of nasal vowels produced by beginner Japanese learners of French
Processing large amounts of non-native (L2) phonological data for acquisition-related research remains a challenging task, especially when acoustic analyses are not straightforward as is the case with nasal vowels. Within the InterPhonologie du Français Contemporain project (IPFC), we have developed a perceptual coding procedure and a piece of dedicated software aimed at providing an intermedia...

This study examines developmental change in the production of epenthetic vowels by Japanese learners of English in relation to acquisition of L2 English speech rhythm. Seventy-two Japanese learners of English in the J-AESOP corpus were divided into lowerand higher-level learners according to their proficiency score and the frequency of vowel epenthesis. Three learners were excluded because no v...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملThe Adaptation of English Initial Clusters by Persian Learners
This study presents an overview of the different strategies that Persian learners of English employ to deal with initial clusters. While vowel epenthesis appears to be the most widespread repair strategy to conform such clusters to Persian phonotactics, the location of the epenthetic vowel varies. In this paper, we investigate two approaches that seek to explain the epenthetic site. The first o...

This study aimed at comparing the perception and production of English front vowels by 17 proficient Brazilian speakers of English as a second language (L2) and 6 native speakers of American English. Towards this end, three experiments were carried out: (i) a production test measuring the first two formants of the participants’ English front vowels, (ii) an oddity discrimination test investigat...
